Tentacles

Cthulhu Mythos fans may want to check out the Monterey Bay Aquarium's new exhibit "Tentacles". On display are not only live octopi, squids, cuttlefish and chambered nautili, but also a huge display of artwork inspired by these creatures. This ranges from the ancient (Minoan vases and mosaics from Pompeii) to the modern (a fine John Coulthart drawing). A scene from the Ray Harryhausen film, "It Came From Beneath The Sea" plays on a continuous loop and cephalopod-themed book jackets are prominently displayed--"20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", of course, but more pertinently, "The Call of Cthulhu". They even have a facsimile of HPL's own drawing of "Big C"! Had I known about this I could have lent them my Stephen Hickman statuette. It's always nice to see HPL getting some exposure in a museum setting. If you decide on a visit, the aquarium is easy to spot--just watch out for the giant inflatable tentacles sprouting from the roof.
