I've always held that weird fiction benefits as much from the artists who illustrate the stories as much as the fictioneers that write them; but collections and portfolios of their work tend to be few and far between, lost in the booming morass of general fantasy artwork. I was very pleased this Christmas to receive a copy of
John Stewart: A Portfolio from Centipede Press - you might know his work from
Whispers or
Weird Tales - and even more pleased when I realized there were sections of the portfolio dedicated to Stewart's illustrations for Clark Ashton Smith's Averoigne stories. A very nice collection, if you can get it.
