The Pale Brown Thing

Working my way through Fritz Leiber, Jr.'s The Pale Brown Thing, newly released in a nice little hardback from Swan River Press. I own a paperback copy of the expanded and slightly revised version, Our Lady of Darkness, but I was keen to read "the original" as it was, and there's a great little introduction by Donald Sydney-Fryer. Reading that, I guess I was struck by how it didn't occur to me, when I first read this, that it contains - or concerns, it might be more appropriate to say - a fictional version of Clark Ashton Smith in certain ways. Anybody else have some thoughts on this?
