Pickman's Press just released a new anthology of Averoigne stories in ebook, with the paperback coming out next month:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZLY38RS

However, this one, "The Averoigne Legacy", is different from the other Averoigne books that came out recently - specifically, none of it is written by CAS. These are short stories and poems by other authors set in Averoigne, from the Roman era to modern day (you might recognize some of them from this site).

Includes the following stories:

THE ORACLE OF SADOQUA by Ron Hilger
THE WEDDING OF SHEILA-NA-GOG by Richard L. Tierney & G. Arthur Rahman
CULT OF THE SINGING FLAME by David Reid Ross
THE DOOM OF AZÉDARAC by Ron Hilger
THE PINK FLOWER OF SAINT ZÉNOBIE by Aaron Hollingsworth
THE BIG AND THE LITTLE by Michael Minnis
HUGH THE DISCERNING by Garnett Elliott
THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF GHOSTLY CATS by Michael Minnis
UNHALLOWED GROUND, UNHOLY FLESH by James Chambers
THE BUTCHER OF VYÔNES by Michael Minnis
THE PASSING OF BELZÉVUTHE by Simon Whitechapel
BLACK ART IN VYÔNES by Keith Chapman
THE COCKATRICE OF CORDELIERS by Michael Minnis
CLOTAIRE OF THE CROSS by Colin Harker
SYMPOSIUM OF THE GARGOYLE by Simon Whitechapel
THE QUARRY by Simon Whitechapel
THE GARGOYLES OF NOTRE DAME by Matthew Baugh
THE RETURN OF THE COLOSSUS by Brian McNaughton
THE MUSE OF AVEROIGNE by Ron Hilger & Henry J. Vester III
THE FELL FÊTE by Manuel Paul Arenas
BOUFONOULA by D.J. Tyrer
A HONEYMOON IN AVEROIGNE by Trevor O. Childers

... and the following poems:

I SING OF AVEROIGNE by Aaron Hollingsworth
THE DRUIDS' ALTAR by D.J. Tyrer
THE LAND OF AVEROIGNE by Edward Stasheff
SÉPHORA by Ashley Dioses
NIGHT VIGIL FOR THE NECROMANCER by Wade German
THE WOODS OF AVEROIGNE by Grace Stillman
SONG OF THE UPROOTED MANDRAKES by Dan Clore
RING OF EIBON by Ron Shiflet
THE INQUISITOR'S SIN by D.J. Tyrer
GUNS OF AVEROIGNE by Cardinal Cox

I am David Reid Ross, author of 'Cult of the Singing Flame'. Besides that one, and Harker's which I haven't gotten around to, I have read twenty of the twenty-two stories and all of the poems. Just to see what my colleagues have gotten up to . . .

The poems are not up to par (including Lovecraft's) but then, poetry is hard. Grace Stillman's was the exception here.

As for the stories: Eleven of the twenty-two (I'm not counting Harker's or mine) are excellent. Another five are good - Simon Whitechapel is responsible for two of these, needs improvement with Averoigne canon. One more (I'll spare this one's author the call-out here), I would rate as "salvageable" and I've notified the editor.

I think "Oracle of Sadoqua" was best left as a synopsis; I doubt anyone could make a silk purse out of CAS's outline. But its (co)author Hilger did well with "Doom of Azédarac" and with "The Muse". I consider "Oracle" and "Return of the Colossus" important for the history of Averoigne fiction, even if these two are not good as stories.

Overall grade: four stars out of five, on the assumption "Cult" isn't in it.

I'm interested to know the particulars of why the poetry is not up to par, in your opinion.

It's okay, you can criticize the poem "Land of Averoigne"; I know it's not my best work. I wrote it in a hurry for purely practical (not artistic) reasons: (1) To summarize the original CAS Averoigne stories for any readers who weren't familiar with them, and (2) To help readers know how to pronounce location names by providing words that rhyme with them.

As with any anthology, some works are stronger than others, and that includes the poetry (there were a few I chose not to include). That said, I particularly like "Song of the Uprooted Mandrakes", and had to campaign HARD to get it included in the anthology (Dan Clore seems to be ideologically allergic to contracts).

Ha! That sounds like Dan Clore.
