I am David Reid Ross, author of 'Cult of the Singing Flame'. Besides that one, and Harker's which I haven't gotten around to, I have read twenty of the twenty-two stories and all of the poems. Just to see what my colleagues have gotten up to . . .

The poems are not up to par (including Lovecraft's) but then, poetry is hard. Grace Stillman's was the exception here.

As for the stories: Eleven of the twenty-two (I'm not counting Harker's or mine) are excellent. Another five are good - Simon Whitechapel is responsible for two of these, needs improvement with Averoigne canon. One more (I'll spare this one's author the call-out here), I would rate as "salvageable" and I've notified the editor.

I think "Oracle of Sadoqua" was best left as a synopsis; I doubt anyone could make a silk purse out of CAS's outline. But its (co)author Hilger did well with "Doom of Azédarac" and with "The Muse". I consider "Oracle" and "Return of the Colossus" important for the history of Averoigne fiction, even if these two are not good as stories.

Overall grade: four stars out of five, on the assumption "Cult" isn't in it.

I'm interested to know the particulars of why the poetry is not up to par, in your opinion.

It's okay, you can criticize the poem "Land of Averoigne"; I know it's not my best work. I wrote it in a hurry for purely practical (not artistic) reasons: (1) To summarize the original CAS Averoigne stories for any readers who weren't familiar with them, and (2) To help readers know how to pronounce location names by providing words that rhyme with them.

As with any anthology, some works are stronger than others, and that includes the poetry (there were a few I chose not to include). That said, I particularly like "Song of the Uprooted Mandrakes", and had to campaign HARD to get it included in the anthology (Dan Clore seems to be ideologically allergic to contracts).
