Does anyone have information on this paperback imprint from the early to mid-1970s, which seems to have been a spinoff from Ballantine? Beagle seems to have reprinted Lovecraft books and Gothic romances and to have disappeared after four years or so. Why "Beagle" rather than just Ballantine, I wonder.

From a commercial viewpoint it seems to pay off for publishers to invent alternate names. People are eager to try new fresh things, that they can identify with something specific and unique.

I have a few Beagle Boxer of the [Fontana Books of Great Ghost Stories] series. I prefer them to the original Fontana imprint, feel more solid. Great old paperbacks.
