Artist identity needed for index

Hej!

I'm working on an index of letters to CAS, and have come across mention of an artist I know nothing of. Can anyone here help me identify this artist, for the index?

The passage in question runs as follows, from the letter from H. P. Lovcraft dated (Oct. 12, 1926):

Quote:
"Of the artists you mention the work of Redon & Ryder is still unfamiliar to me..."

If you can help me identify Ryder (I already know who Odilon Redon is), I would be more than grateful.

Yrs,

Phillip

Could rhis be the American artist Albert Pinkham Ryder (1847-1917)? Many of his landscapes are pastoral and benign in feeling, but several of the other paintings are grim and broodingly atmospheric: "Death on a Pale Horse", "Siegfried and the Rhine Maidens", "The Tempest". Many of these are reminiscent of similar work by Turner, but a few others such as "Roadside Meeting" strongly resemble Odilon Redon's paintings.

Thank you, Jim!

You have made my life lighter, and I am very thankful to your assistance here.

You should see the index up not next update, but the update after that.

You are welcome, and thank you, Phillip and Dr. Farmer. I look forward to seeing the index.
