Story about a women bitten by a snake

Hello.

Some years ago I read about a book (or was it a short story?) about a young woman who was bitten by a snake and who gradually evolved reptilian elemnets in her. I am sure it was written in the 19th century and I would like to ask if somebody knows the title of it and the name of the author.

Thanks a lot.

Possibly you are thinking of the novel ELSIE VENNER (1861) by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

In that novel, however, Elsie herself was not bitten by the rattlesnake. Rather, Elsie's mother was bitten by a rattlesnake while pregnant with Elsie.

I did read the novel BTW. I did not feel that Mr. Holmes made quite enough use of his weird and interesting premise.

Thanks a lot, Platypus. The novel is probably what I have been looking for.
