Has anybody read "The Vats" by Walter de la Mare? I read it yesterday but I cannot say what the story is all about. The Vats are definitely a representation of something, but of what?

The Vats represent the Christian hope/promise of eternal life. They contain, in infinite quantities, the water that that the rich man ("Dives") called for one drop of, in the parable of Lazarus and the rich man. See Luke 16:19-31.
