First Night Shade CAS book turned in!!!

Okay, it's been awhile, but we've turned in the corrected texts of the first CAS book in Night Shade Book's series. Here are the contents:

The End of the Story
by Clark Ashton Smith
Edited by Scott Connors and Ron Hilger

Table of Contents

Introduction [To be announced]
A Note on the Texts

To the Daemon

The Abomination of Yondo
Sadastor
The Ninth Skeleton
The Last Incantation
The End of the Story
The Phantoms of the Fire
A Night in Malneánt
The Resurrection of the Rattlesnake
Thirteen Phantasms
The Venus of Azombeii
The Tale of Satampra Zeiros
The Monster of the Prophecy
The Metamorphosis of the World
The Epiphany of Death
A Murder in the Fourth Dimension
The Devotee of Evil
The Satyr
The Planet of the Dead
The Uncharted Isle
Marooned in Andromeda
The Necromantic Tale
The Immeasurable Horror
A Voyage to Sfanomöe

Appendix 1: Notes
Appendix 2: The Satyr: Alternate Conclusion
Appendix 3: From the Crypts of Memory

The notes are quite substantial. We don't do a full-blown annotated version of the stories, but we do provide as much information as possible about their composition and publication as is possible, and includes copious quotations from both Smith's own letters and notes as well as correspondence from Lovecraft, August Derleth, Farnsworth Wright, David Lasser, and others.

I did make one error: I erroneously omitted "The Root of Ampoi," which should appear between "Marooned in Andromeda" and "The Necromantic Tale." I forgot to enter this on my master list--guess what my least favorite CAS story is--and so didn't order the mss copied. So it will appear in volume 2. Oops.

This is exciting. Any idea when it will be released?

It also looks like you can once again place subscription orders for these books on the Nightshade website. I already have my subscription ordered but my brother and some friends missed out and would jump at the chance to order a subscription.....so is that an error on the website or no?

Small change: I found the manuscript for "The Root of Ampoi" (didn't even realize that I had it, came across in a pile looking for some other material!), so it will be in volume 1. All's well that ends well, I guess!

Red-faced,

Saw Jeremy Lassen of NSB this weekend, he says the first book should be out in July, bonus book in June. There are two titles ahead of it, and we still need to find someone with literary chops to write the intro. Everyone wants to, but are too busy at the moment :(

Great news Scott! And To the Daemon is a wonderful choice to introduce the book(s)!

"Tell me many tales, O benign maleficent daemon..."

(BTW, Boyd, there are 2 minor errors in To the Daemon on the site.

On the site page, in the third line the word "wear" should be "weary".

In the first line of the second paragraph, the word "fore" should be "lore".

I twice sent you emails about this in the past, but maybe you didn't get them. So I thought I would mention it here.)

Sorry I missed your emails, it happens sometimes.
BTW, we managed to come up with a manuscript for "The Root of Ampoi," so it made it into volume 1. Surprisingly, I didn't think it sucked as much upon this re-reading.... However, it is still deadlast on my ranking of Smith's stories.

Best,
Scott

Waiting for the proofreader to send the galleys to Ron and me for double-checking. Should be here this week. We're doing this quite carefully.

Amazon now has preliminary cover art for the first volume at

(I hope that worked; otherwise just search for "Smith, Clark Ashton" and "End of the Story".)

Hello

Will the "Collected fantasies" also be available in paperpack or is this a hardcover-only edition ?

So far plans are only for hardcovers, but anything is possible provided enough green is waved in front of the right noses. In the meanwhile, Bison Books has brought out two fine Smith collections in trade paperback, facsimile reprints of OUT OF SPACE AND TIME and LOST WORLDS. The texts are the old Arkham House/Weird Tales versions, but hey! they brought CAS to the party didn't they? :)

It looks like Amazon's release date for the first book has come and gone.

Any further word on when this book will begin shipping (and why Amazon seems to have cover art and Nightshade doesn't?)

So far the book is still at the first proofreader, it hasn't even made it to Ron and me yet. This is somewhat disappointing, since I would really have liked it to have been ready for WFC this year. Oh well--I did my part, it will get here in time.

Oh yes--the artwork that Amazon shows is a rough draft. Van Hollander tweaked it a bit, it is quite nice.

I'm anxiously awaiting the first book in this series, and the rest. Also relieved that the art appears to be quite evocative and worthy of Smith (Bosch too!). I was a little fearful this series might go the way of Nightshade's Hodgson books. I don't mean to diss that fine company or the wonderful content of the Hodgsons, but those embossed, nonjacketed covers are depressingly reminiscent of the Franklin Library and other cheesy-fancy imprints. I wish they'd just gone with jackets and an artist as good as Jason Van Hollander. I think a discussion of the artwork (or lack thereof) of these small-press pubs would be very interesting: Ash-Tree's minimalist look, Hippocampus' retro-pulp imagery, etc. (not to mention the fabulous unsung covers for Arkhams by the great Ronald Clyne, who recently passed away in Brooklyn).

Anyway, I've got my Amazon pre-order in for the first Smith and am crossing my fingers it won't be too long. Thanks for all your hard work on it, Scott and Ron!

Here's the latest info/delay explanations from the publisher via their email list --

Quote:
Clark Ashton Smith is also very late. This has not escaped our
notice. There are two reasons for this. The first is that we can never
seem to get a classic out on time. Those of you who have ordered the
Hodgson, Wellman, Dunsany, or Wagner sets are aware of this. No excuse
for it on our part, it just seems to happen every time.

The other reason is timing. Originally we'd intended volume 1 to be
released in October of 2005. We simply didn't receive the manuscript in
time, due to no fault on the part of the editors. The manuscripts
we're working from are coming from a large university special collection,
and that special collection turned out to be stored offsite while they
were doing renovations. It took us forever to get the material we
needed for volume 1, and we're just now getting the material for vols. 2 &
3.

Publishing works on a schedule. Most of our books are geared for the
book market, which is to say the shelves of your local bookstore. We
announce a book, the sales reps go out and solicit orders from the
bookstores. If we don't get the book out on time, those orders cancel, and
we're sitting on a bunch of books that won't make it into the
bookstores. This is a wonderful way to go bankrupt in a very short amount of
time. For classics, this is less important, because the bookstores don't
tend to stock the classics, so we're not relying on their orders to
sell the book.

We have limited resources, like most independent publishers. When
Smith isn't ready on time, our designers and proofreaders and copyeditors
need to move on to the next project. Smith may be late, but there's
always five or ten other books in the pipeline that cannot be late. So
while Smith vol. 1 has been at the proofreader for a few months, we have
to wait until he's got a gap in the schedule before he can get to it.
Had we the manuscript when we were supposed to have it, then he would
have had it in his schedule to do it. Now it's a matter of him getting
to it as soon as he can, without delaying any of the time critical
projects he's working on for us.

Those of you who have suffered through Hodgson, Wellman, and Dunsany
sets with us know that we'll get the books, and when we do it'll have
been worth the wait. Those of you who are just now experiencing the
dreaded "Night Shade can't get a classic out on time to save their lives"
syndrome, please bear with us.

That said, all signs are good for having Smith vol. 1 out very VERY
soon.

Apologies if this has been posted already here.

Just got the word that the galleys for the first Night Shade collection (The End of the Story) will be here this week. Luckily I am off for four days, then work for two night shifts on the weekend, then am off for two more days before I go on a six-day stretch--then World Fantasy Con in Austin. I'll finish my proofreading and send them on to Ron.
Best,
Scott

Yes, things have progressed nicely in the last month. Scott and I have both gone over the proofs and sent them back to Night Shade. Ramsey Campbell has also written a very nice intro which was the last real hold-up, so things look to be back on track. Out by the end of the year? With a little luck! But regardless of when it actually appears, it looks to be a fantastic collection.

YAY!! That was seriously good news!

If I'm lucky, this book will hit my mailbox at approximately the same time as I get the CAS Poems III, enabling me to go on a real CAS binge. :-)

I mailed the corrected galleys to Night Shade on Tuesday, so with a little luck Clark's next birthday (January 13, 2007) might have something really special to celebrate.
On the other hand, I still haven't received the CD-ROMs from Brown University with the scans of the manuscripts that we need for volumes 2 and 3. : (
To all of you in the US and Canada, Happy Thanksgiving!

THE END OF THE STORY goes to printers!!!
Posted by: Scott Connors (IP Logged)
Date: 29 November, 2006 10:55PM
I just got off the telephone with Jason Williams over at Night Shade Books. He has finished entering the last corrections and revisions to the file for the book and it goes to the printer on Friday. There is an excellent chance that the snows of Hyperborea will blanket this Yule Season. The cover artwork by Jason van Hollander is excellent, and is totally different from what he did for RED WORLD OF POLARIS: it's much more realistic, yet still surreal, and is based upon several of Smith's drawings and carvings. Ramsey Campbell did a fine introduction as well. I am tremendously excited about this. Ron and I have already started on volume 2, and we finally received the manuscripts we needed from Brown University last weekend. We're going to try to hand in volume 2 at the end of February 2007, for a summer publication date, and volume 3 by the end of May, for this time next year (although I'd love it if we could have it out in time for the World Fantasy Convention in Saratoga, NY).

So please spread the word about this finally coming out.

Best,
Scott

Is anyone else slightly annoyed that the $150 5-volume CAS subscription offer has been withdrawn prematurely? I went to order it today (finally scraped the money together) and found on the Night Shade Books website that now one can only order Book 1. The description did say that the subscription with bonus offer would be available "until the first book is released."... It hasn't been, yet :). Any chance this can be made available again for another week or so? Pleeeeeaaase?

Thanks, I appreciate the offer, and the response (I didn't get one from my e-mail to Night Shade). Not sure I need the bonus paperback; I was more interested in "locking in" my order at the reduced price. Just venting, I guess, sorry. I'll have to suffer through buying them from Amazon.com one-by-one (but for around the same $150 :).

BTW, Scott, just finished reading Red World of Polaris from NSB (liked your introduction) and began Star Changes yesterday. Keep up the good work!

I've had problems with Night Shade too. I tried two or three times to pre-order the CA Smith set when it was first announced, but for some reason the order wouldn't go through (I order plenty of books and other things online successfully, so I don't think it was me). I also emailed Jason a couple of times and even called (Night Shade was in Portland Oregon then, where I live) and never got a response. Very frustrating. Finally I just decided to order it through Amazon, which at least never lets me down. I'm not sure what the problem is at Night Shade but I think they do have a problem with customer service and being responsive. Just me $.02.

I appreciate your kind words about the intros to RWoP and Star Changes.
Regarding Night Shade Books being somewhat unresponsive to individual orders: that is because they actually want you to order the books from Amazon or, preferably, a brick-and-mortar store. Their business model is based upon selling to distributors and chains, and everytime someone orders one of their titles, or (even better) special orders it at Borders or Barnes and Nobles, that brings them more attention from the buyers at the store, so they order more titles. It works pretty well for them, especially since they went to Diamond for distribution; previously Baker and Taylor and Ingrams paid small presses pretty much when they felt like it, which could be over a year when it was due. Agree with it or not, that's their story and they're stickin' to it!
May you all enjoy a festive Yuletide. Time for me to do my annual re-reading of HPL's "The Festival."
Best,
Scott

Good to know. I had thought the opposite, that they would get more money per sale if I bought directly from them. But if it helps Night Shade then I will buy from a store in the future.

Keep checking. I picked up ARCs on Saturday. The wait is almost over.
On other news: we're due to turn in volume 2 to the publisher early next month.
And it appears that there is some movement on the long-delayed Averoigne Chronicles from Donald M. Grant.

Hello,

I subscribed to the CAS collection from the beginning, but in the mean time I've moved to a new appartment, trying desperately now to change my address of the subscription:(

I tried to reply to the mail which confirmed my subscription long time ago, but got no reply; I tried asking in the Nightshade Forum and only got the reply that the first book is done and will be shipped soon, but still not how I could change my address.

Dear Mr. Scott Connors, is there any chance you could help me out here?

Many thanks in advance!
