EldDark is blocked in China.

I can't believe socialists would do something like that.

Yeah, only evil Leftists would ever advocate censorship or restrictions on personal freedom of any kind. ;-)

No, just evil people in general. Or frightened ones.

I have emailed china to ask what the deal is, I'll let you know what response I get.

What amuses me is that the website for Baen Books, an American publisher of science fiction with a decidedly conservative slant, some of our more left-leaning friends might go so far as to describe them as "fascist" even (although one of their top writers is an avowed Troskyite), is not blocked in the PRC. I suspect that the blocking was more a glitch than anything; maybe they have filtering software that blocks anything that is described as "decadent" (a big bugaboo for extremists on both sides of the political spectrum).
This situation reminds me of the time that Australian Customs was confiscating copies of Lovecraft's DREAM-QUEST OF UNKNOWN KADATH as being contrary to public morals. (I am not making that up!)

"Why censor?" It's an interesting question. Can't see that "evil" really explains it or that "frightened" is the best term. "Distrustful" might be better.

But Europe's not so far behind China: there are opinions people go to prison for there that Americans don't. So far.

It's your drug-smuggling.

Scott!

Australian customs even banned Venus and Adonis at one point. Same reasons.

Ummm... are you sure? In some countries it is illegal to deny the holocaust, which is IMO a stupid law, but understandable considering the 20th C European history, but other than that I'm scratching my head to think of anything.

You ask me whether I'm sure people go to prison in Europe for their opinions, then point out holocaust denial is illegal in some countries there. So are certain other opinions and many people are working hard to expand and strengthen the laws. Maybe rather than scratch your head you ought to do a little research, then get ready for it to happen in the US too.

Well I could research the freedom of speech laws for the entire European union or you could just tell me. I'm interested to know and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I might also like to suggest that the US is way ahead of most European countries at the moment for locking people up for no reason and with out a trial.

Is it just me, or is this not "slightly" off topic?

Not only off topic, but revelatory.

Indeed you are both right it is off topic. I did try to edit my post but for some reason it wouldn't have it and not the edit button has disappeared. Oh well. I blame the Chinese government!

Looking at the Moorcock Miscellany site I see they have a similar topic, as that is also blocked by the mighty firewall of China, although apparently conan.com isn't blocked.
