Whats in your collection?

I know fans and followers of CAS, HPL, and the rest of them have things in their collection- rare, authentic or not. I thought it would be neat to share. I'll go first.

1. H.P.L 1934 x mas card to R.H. Barlow (with Lovecrafts signature on bottom and year in roman numerals- authentic and paid over 500 bucks for this little guy)

2. 3 weird tales issues all 1st appearence with h.p.l stories (Cats of Ulthar, Curse of Yig, and Dunwich Horror)
3. CAS envelope from Weird Tales.
4. August Dereleth letter to Frank Belknap Long
5. R.H. Barlow typed letter with signature to Donald Wandrei about a piece of artwork he lost (Signature on bottom)
6. R.H. Barlows two issues of Dragon Fly
7. Roy A. Squires version of H.P.Ls' Cats Of Ulthar (Very nice job)
8. 1st edition of Arthur Machens' The Great God Pan (Lovecraft wouldn't be jealous as he didn't care for 1st editions)
9. A genuine copy of the providence journal where Sonia Greene 1st printed her memoir "H.P.L: As his wife remembers him" (Gotta get a frame for this as its starting to tear, yikes)
10. II, III, IV, V, of H.P.Ls' selected letters series (all 1st editions. Now gotta get the 1st one).
11. The United Amateur Volume 18 no 1. (awesome poems by Samuel Loveman and H.P.L)
12. National Tribute (August 1921) (Complete with the rare pic of H.P.L smiling and many other pics including James F. Morton and Sonia Greene as well as others).

13. Actual Necrenomican printing of Sonias Memoir (Hey adding this gives more coolness to the fact I have the original newspaper printing and plus this version is better written than the one in the paper).

14. R.H. Barlows: On Lovecraft and Life (1992).

15. Frank Belknap Longs' "Dreamer On The Nightside" (People didn't like this one but I did. Good Job Frank).

Looking forward to hearing about other peoples collections. Would be nice to add some CAS sculptures to my lot but that sort of money eludes me, lol.

Amazing stuff there- particularly the pre-break Barlow/Wandrei letter. Love to see what it says. Scott Connors was thinking of doing a Barlow article, he might be able to use that info.

I'm like HPL when it comes to 1st editions- I prefer usuable editions, rather than curios. I hate it when some of my books become collectors' items- because then I have to watch out how I handle them. For some reason, whenever I spill my tea, it always seems to hit the one semi-valuable book sitting out...

My cheapness is bad in many ways- for instance, I don't have any of the Joshi HPL corrections from Arkham house, just the 1970's Ballantine pb's! So when I finally go to submit my HPL essay, I'm going to have to check out all the Joshi volumes from the local library and backtrace all my quotes, to make sure they're textually accurate, plus to get the new pagination... Should only take a few months....

Sounds good Gavin. Tell Scott if he needs anything I'll look through my Barlow files and provide him with any info needed.

Greetings!

I am a long-time fan of CAS and have over the years acquired a modest collection of his works,
as a well as a few other items from other favorite authors.

1) A signed 1st edition of "Out of Space and Time",
with a 'well-loved' Hannes Bok dust jacket, inscribed

"To Ben, with
profound admiration
of his volcanic and
glacial genius,
from Clark.

Aug. 1st 1942"

2) A signed 1st edition of "The Dark Chateau", inscribed

"Dear Eff-Jay:
Some of my own favorite
verses are in this.
Klar-Kashton

Pacific Grove, Cal.
Nov. 26th, 1959"

(I think this was Forrest J. Ackerman's copy, judging from the inscription,
and I tried to give it to him for his last birthday, but his ride arrived
before I could arrange matters.)

3) A signed 1st edition of "The Black Book of Clark Ashton Smith,"
inscribed by Donald Sidney-Frayer and Rah Hoffman

4) "Planets and Dimensions", edited by Charles K. Wolfe

5) "As It Is Written", signed by the illustrator, R. J. Krupowicz

6) A 1st edition of "A Rendezvous in Averoigne", with Ray Bradbury's signature
on his introduction to the book

7) A 1938 Weird Tales pulp featuring "The Garden of Adompha" on the cover

I also have some paperback editions of CAS's works, including the British Panther editions
with the astounding Bruce Pennington covers. His cover for "Lost Worlds, Vol II",
featuring the Emissary of Thasaidon in "Xeethra", is a masterpiece of illustration,
and was what introduced me to the amazing prose within that book.

I always like a good bragging thread. Here are a few things in my collection:

1. Volumes 4-6 of the Fugitive Poems of CAS, Xiccarph edition, Roy A. Squires

2. To George Sterling, Fugitive Poems of CAS, 4th Fascicle, Zothique ed., Squires

3. Typescript of the prose poem "Narcissus" with handwritten corrections by CAS

4. Typescript of the poem "Give Me Your Lips" with handwritten corrections by CAS

5. Small original drawing (approx. 4-5" square) by CAS of a demon or grotesque head and shoulders

6. Envelope from CAS addressed to Samuel Loveman

7. "Under Orion," a book of poems by Eric Barker, Kayak Press, originally owned by Mrs. CAS and inscribed to her by Barker

8. "Emperor of Dreams," CAS bibliography by Donald Sidney Fryer, with a postcard from Fryer addressed to me (responding to my letter noting a couple of corrections needed in the book)

9. "Grotesques and Fantastiques," a book of CAS art pub. by Gerry de la Ree

10. "Klarkash-Ton and Monstro Ligriv," a book of letters from CAS and Virgil Finlay, pub. by Gerry de la Ree

11. "Selected Poems," by CAS, Arkham House hardcover (still one of my favorites, even though I now have the Hippocampus complete editions)

12. "Other Dimensions," by CAS, Arkham House hardcover

13. "Tales of Science and Sorcery," CAS, Arkham House hardcover

14. "Sonnets to Jonquil and All," by Fritz Leiber, pub. by Squires, signed by Leiber

15. "And Flights of Angels," spiral bound portfolio/tribute to Hannes Bok, by Emil Petaja, Bokanalia Memorial Foundation

16. "Necronomicon" 1 and 2, art books by H. R. Giger

17. And a 10-volume hardcover set of the Arabian Nights (Burton translation), with 6 additional volumes of "Supplemental Nights"

Well, that's some of it, in addition to several Necronomicon Press editions, etc. You may begin drooling. :)

I have E & C, Sandalwood, Startreader, signed to me by Clark (one has the signature style used in 1918 - his more rapid writing when I knew him below) - the paperbacks, Hill of Dionyius, In Memoriam, Monster of the Prophecy, -
My Genius Loci was loaned out years ago, so there is an original signed one out floating about somewhere - I bought a replacement, plus the new Black Abbott, Red World, and all of DSF's stuff signed by him -
Star Treader still has original book jacket.

I am of an age that I will sell the originals to make sure they stay in caring hands - the price - very high, but justifiably so.

A bit of trivia: When I attended the University of Illinois for a graduate degree a few years ago, I was surprised and excited to see that their (extraordinary) library had few CAS titles, but that one of them was an original 1912 edition of The Star-Treader--and it was shelved in the open stacks, no less. What a further surprise (extreme sarcasm here) to discover that, although the catalog listed the book as available, it was missing from the stacks--no doubt long since stolen and sold by someone who realized the book's value.

I informed the rare book room at Illinois of this major screw-up, after the fact, and they blandly invited me to inform them if I felt there were any other items in the collection that should be in the rare book room, rather than in the open stacks. At least Columbia, when I was there, had the sense to keep this volume and a few others in its rare book collection. It was a nuisance to consult them, to be sure, but at least the volumes were available for me and others to read!

When I was at San Francisco State, their library had Spells and Philtres and, I think, Ebony and Crystal. They also had a lot of George Sterling, to wit: A Wine of Wizardry, Sonnets to Craig, Testimony of the Suns, House of Orchids, and Beyond the Breakers. Everything was on the shelves. The complete Ebony and Crystal was already reprinted in the Selected Poems, which I had, but I wanted Spells and Philtres as well as all the Sterling. So I copied them all by hand (I had more stamina in those days). I still have my manuscripts! Berkeley's library had Nora May French, but I never made it over there. Thank the gods for the Nora May French website (as well as thank whoever created the site).

I think I saw this on Lloyd Currey's website. Anything you buy from him is 100% on the up-and-up.

I saw these on ebay. I think you beat me out on a couple of them. Well, at least they went to a kinsman! Good job!

I would appreciate it. Please contact me off list--ask Boyd for it if there's any problem.

This is definitely Ackerman's copy. He sold off most of his signed CAS books when he was thinning out the Ackermansion.

You lucked out on the first book. I am pretty sure that the "Ben" referred to is Benjamin DeCasseres, who wrote the "Emperor of Shadows" piece that prefaces SELECTED POEMS.

"Anything you buy from him [Currey] is 100% on the up-and-up".

He did not accurately represent the condition of a set of books that I bought from him last Summer. I had just gotten out of the hospital when the set arrived, however, so I was too drained to fight about it, at the time.

The point is, in my opinion, none of these people are necessarily "100% on the up-and-up", and the principle of caveat emptor should always apply. That said, happy collecting!

This just in: I just bought a first printing : well here is the description: Exit Into Eternity: Tales of the Bizarre and Supernatural
Eddy, C.M., Jr.
Providence, RI: Oxford Press, 1973, 1973. fine book in fine dj. First Edition. Large Octavo. 121 pages. Five stories by Lovecraft crony. Signed by Eddy's widow on front end sheet. Blue buckram with gilt lettering.
his volume is a carefully chosen collection of five stories that reflect the close relationship between Mr. Eddy and H. P. Lovecraft, author of the weird and macabre, as creative writers and friends. Three of the stories in this book, "Pilgrimage of Peril", "The Vengeful Vision", and "A Solitary Solution" were written during the Lovecraftian association. A fourth, "Miscreant From Murania" was completed in 1951. The subjects of the stories touch upon the themes of teleportation, ghosts, mystery, and vampirism. The fifth story, "Black Noon" started by Mr. Eddy in 1967, but not completed due to his death, is presented here in its unfinished form. This tale is a fictionalized parallelism of C. M. Eddy's and H. P. Lovecraft's literary liasion. Table of Content: Introduction / Pilgrimage Of Peril / The Vengeful Vision / Miscreant From Murania / A Solitary Solution / Black Noon (a beginning)"

I was speaking of a book's provenance. Book condition is inherently subjective; even brand-new books may have flaws, from shareless handling in the warehouse or the store, from damage during shipping, etc. I've always found Lloyd to describe books on the conservative side, but that's me. If he had known you were not happy, I am sure he would have refunded your money.
