All in all, a great comedian, even unto the very end!

You probably were not around in fandom in the mid to late 1970s, when de Camp published his "bio" of HPL. Believe me, the Esoteric Order of Dagon made the Rehupans look positively disorganized in the campaign Dirk Mosig led against that books errors and distortions. If the internet had existed then, western civilization might not have survived the experience. Now that HPL's position in the canon is fairly secure, everybody has mellowed out somewhat, but for years commentators from outside the field remarked upon the methodical and disciplined campaign waged by Lovecraft's disciples. REH is in a situation analogous to where HPL was at regarding critical acceptance perhaps 15 years ago.

It seems to me that critical acceptance of an author has absolutely nothing to do with the circumstances of the author's life. (By the way, I was around; I just turned 50 last month! I read de Camp's Lovecraft biography when it was first published.)
