Lovecraft and Imaginary Worlds

Hi All,

Some on this forum might be interested in _As If: Modern Enchantment and the Literary Prehistory of Virtual Reality_ (Oxford University Press paperback; Kindle edition also available). It's a history of how readers, starting in the late nineteenth century, began to "inhabit" imaginary worlds communally and persistently, effectively transforming them into virtual worlds that anticipate virtual reality today. The three case studies are Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, and Tolkien's Middle-earth. The Lovecraft chapter does discuss CAS, although the book as a whole doesn't involve him that much. Still, as a related-interest book, I wanted to mention it.

Best,
Michael
