The local press reported this last week, but I was slow/forgetful (as usual) about posting this. So should you want to travel here to see the gigantic corpse/phallus flower, which blooms once every ten years, you're outta luck. God must have an imagination like CAS:

We had one in bloom last year at the butterfly museum in Houston - it takes a long time to die back, and its name is clearly from the aroma - it is remarkably similar to 3weeks plus dead - I would hope none of you ever know this scent in any format other than this - for those who have known combat, it is unmistakable.

It wasn't combat in my case, but finding a neighbor not quite three weeks after he had died... in July, in Austin. No, it isn't a smell anyone can ever forget....

We have one here at Cornell U. My kids and wife went to see/smell it a couple months back when it bloomed. I was content to stay home and watch the streaming video of it on the web ;-).

Haha. I thought so too, and "unfortunately" for them (the wife and kids), they missed the full bloom by some several hours; they went a bit too early. I'm not sure whether it went into full "corpse mode" later that evening or the next day. Although I welcome new experiences, being a relatively simple soul I figured I'd temper that with a little bit of common sense. Why subject yourself to unpleasantness unnecessarily? I guess I took my mother's words to heart, while we were standing underneath some carnival rides when I was about ten, as my father and younger sibling were indulging. "Should I ride the 'Tiltawhirl?'", I asked. She said, "Let me put it to you this way... Why would I pay someone to torture me?"

That's the way my Dad feels about hot sauce, and hot pepper fanatics.

But it hurts so good!

I love spicy food, though I've taken it a little too far on a couple of occasions. I know when I've reached that point, because I have an uncontrollable hiccuping fit that lasts for minutes on end. I've learned from painful experience that when your Indian friends warn you to taste only a little bit of something they think is spicy....take heed!
