A scarab of lapis lazuli, looted from an old tomb by an Egyptologist, which gives the appearance of being haunted or animated by some unknown force^ One night, when he is asleep, it crawls into his mouth and chokes him.^ [One day, it flies in his face with terrific velocity, strikes him in the right eye and pierces his brain.]
