Smith's traditional ghost story, "The Ghost of Mohammed Din" was published when he was only 17 years old, in The Overland Monthly. It is an amazingly mature piece of fiction, which is not in itself surprising, but I wonder why he never offered it to Weird Tales? It would certainly have been accepted. Did CAS view it as too conventional, or had he lost track of his teenage fiction by his early 30s? For the uninitiated, it appeared in Other Dimensions and the Miscellaneous Writings. Were these works in Dr. Farmer's closet along with those onyx diamonds?
