Opus 1744

Phillip A. Ellis

I am the wind that will seize and destroy,
I am the fire that will break and will burn,
I an the flood that will swallow all joy,
I am the quake that no structure can spurn.

I am the beast that will rend and will tear
   though all the world is my enemy dire;
I am the blood that dissolves all men's care,
and am the bile that will poison with fire.

I am the darkness that makes it all vain,
I am the light that reveals with despair,
I am the lightning that ferries all pain,
I am the spirits that poison the air.

I am the canker no potion can heal,
I am the sinner that saint can not save,
I am the soul that will never have weal,
I am the flesh that belongs to the grave.

I am the secret all tongues will betray,
I am the rumour whose centre is fear,
I am the shadow that wearies the day,
I am the vortex, the quicksand and mere.

I am the wind that will seize and destroy,
I am the fire that will break and will burn,
I an the flood that will swallow all joy,
I am the quake that no structure can spurn.
