While general folk wisdom notes that Smith's Averoigne is based upon the historic province/Duchy of Auvergne, it is an interesting coincidence that the modern Department of Aveyrone is just south of the old province's territory and is adjacent to it. Was Smith playing with words or is this just a coincidence? Whichever, might make a good site for a CAS conference sometime.
