Scott - regarding Clark's using people he new
as character types: Your selection of the undertaker is a good guess - you may recall
the lead character in "The Adventurer" fragment
which will be in the upcoming publication of
"Sword" I mentioned while you were here was
probably named for the old postmaster in
Old Town. The man resembled the character
physically, and Clark (sometimes as gift to
friend) used a name or a physical description
of someone he knew. Herrington himself could
have easily qualified as Avoosl - his first name
you recall was Greeley - the rhyme is obvious.
I should not be surprised to find in his experience
a Dr. Moreno from "Schizoid Creator" had crossed
his path at some point. Remember Clark was in
the San Francisco Milieu when Freuian Psychology
(etal) was in its early flush of notoriety among
the avant garde.

I've always hoped to follow up "The Averoigne Chronicles" with further collections arranged by setting, but my dismal experience with getting the first book published (yup, still waiting) definitely took the wind out of my sails. Originally (around 1985) I grouped all of Smith's tales, complete with prose poems, into eight different collections based on setting. The Averoigne collection was merely the first I submitted. The next title was to have been "The Hyperborean Mythos" so named because of the large number of mythos-related tales in this series. I've always thought these groupings worked pretty well, but as I recall I didn't get much of a reaction from Scott when I shared these lists with him a year or two ago . . . Hmmmmm!??
