Hi, there! The Seventies...the high-water mark for fantasy...... and comics, and animation, and music....

The much- and unjustly maligned 1970's was truly one of the greatest decades of the century, in my view, for music, T.V., movies, and pop culture that is truly bizarre and laughable in a way not seen before or since. In that way, I even welcome disco, as it is unintentionally hilarious. You haven't heard anything until you've heard the Disco Noel album of Xmas classics set to that dreadful beat....

Don't forget the women of the seventies, either. I was just a toddler back then, dagnabit. But pictures still exist-- as well as the equally-fuzzy memories of the men who saw first saw them.....

What was it about the seventies? If they had had PC's back then, they would have been Gods... As it was, they had to watch horror films on 8mm projectors, watch pornography in hot and reeking storefront movie theaters, had to listen to music on 8-tracks, had to buy their comics at news stands -and if they missed an issue, or missed a movie at the theater, then you had to search for it through mail order.... And science fiction and fantasy--- I have this recurring image in my head of long-haired sci-fi afficiandos with mutton-chop whiskers and drooping mustaches, smoking pot in dingy black-lit rooms with glowing psychedelic posters on the walls while reading Tolkien and listening to Yes music and perhaps burning incense before going out to see a midnight showing at the drive-in of Ralph Bakshi's Wizards... What a weird funky time. I wish I was older back then......

It wasn't quite that bad, but you weren't too far off.

It was a midnight showing of Bakshi's Fritz the Cat as I recall.

LOL...well you would have had to be there. The promises of the 60's had gone down in flames of war and watergate and disco (which is more fun now than it seemed then). It was also a time when all of us baby boomers had to get real jobs and confront the contradictions that entailed.

But we did have the original SNL start during those years and that helped!

To this day, I cannot hear "Shake Your Booty" without actually getting physically ill...
